By A Nose at Del Mar

She was of small stature with a smooth sable coat. With her head held high she carried herself true to her name…Princess Con. She was a California girl, born and raised. But, apparently, the words “and they’re off” didn’t mean the same thing to her as the other seven horses in the race. She had trouble exiting the starting gate and finished last, many, many, many lengths behind the winner.  Maybe this just wasn’t her race. Maybe the size of the jockey should have been a clue. He was heavier than the rest and she was a smaller filly. Even my screaming didn’t help her around the track.

Fire of the Angels

The way we were hiking up and up, I figured we’d be with those angels soon. Five miles of Devisadero Loop Trail #108 trekked us up an overall gain of 1,100 feet.  Past pinion, juniper and gambel oak trees we ended at 8,304 feet.  Standing in the shadow of 13,161 foot Wheeler Peak this is New Mexico’s highest mountain. Now I know why our hosts called this a high desert hike.  Cacti, rocks, an occasional lizard were about the only scenery on the trail.

Castle Hopping On the Rhine River

German castles…legends and folk lore.  All those stone turrets and towers, vine covered slopes, and narrow villages nestled along the winding river make one think of dragons, fairy tales, damsels with flowing gowns, and knights in shining armor.
Spend a day following the winding Rhine River, viewing one historical castle after another.  Some castles were built as toll collection sites for river traffic, or as fortresses to defend vineyards and silver mines.  Some were built to show power.  Some have been restored.  Some are still in ruins.  All are impressive.
Start at Rudesheim and head north to Koblenz.  Many castles along the Rhine still have their turrets and towers.  Others have only pieces and parts.  Wars, opposing dynasties, and feuding land owners have taken their toll on the imposing fortresses lining both sides of the river.  Picturesque villages still cling to the steep slopes.

A Week in Baumholder

Over the hills and through the woods might seem like a fairy tale beginning.  Actually it’s the way to Baumholder, Germany.  Literally hidden in the valley of the surrounding hills, Baumholder might be hard to find on some maps and even harder, if not impossible, to find in guide books.
Find it, explore the town and surrounding area, and you won’t be disappointed.  Baumholder, Germany, is familiar to those in the U.S. Army as it is home to the largest concentration of combat soldiers outside the U.S.
But, don’t assume you must be in the Army to find anything to do in or around Baumholder.  This small town is big on hospitality and the surrounding area of west-central Germany boasts plenty of sights for everyone’s tastes.

Be Prepared

What do dive instructors teach you? Always be prepared…always. We should have been prepared with an underwater camera.
Our six person dive boat left Key Largo for a 45 minute ride to the dive site. “Quiescence”, our favorite dive operators, takes us to different sites each time. Dive sites are named with geography or landmarks in mind. This time the trip was to North North Dry Rocks. To us, the sites all look the same from the boat but the captains always seem to find the spot they’re looking for.
July is my favorite time to dive the Keys. Air and water are about the same temperature so wave action is minimal. Hurricanes haven’t stirred up the sandy bottom so visibility is at its maximum. This trip promised to be a good dive…warm clear water, only one foot waves and lots of sunshine.
Our boat was skimming along when suddenly our captain cut the motor and motioned animatedly to 8 or 10 fins in the water about 20 feet off the side of the boat. He quietly told us to put on only our snorkel gear and slide quietly into the water. In return he was rewarded with “deer in the headlights” looks from all six of us! Those were FINS…
